Reports: Franchises’ purse for IPL 2024 auction to be increased to INR 100 crore
The 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, likely to take place in late December, might see a few changes with regards to the franchises’ purse. It is understood that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will likely increase the purse to INR 100 crore for the forthcoming IPL mini-auction.
In addition to this, the franchises will be allowed to make as many retentions as they like while the rest of the players will go under the hammer in the auction. Furthermore, the BCCI is pondering over the idea of staging the mini-auction in late December, so as to avoid a clash with the Christmas holidays. In addition to this, the date for the auction will be decided following the conclusion of the 2023 ODI World Cup which will be played in India in October-November.
“The focus is now on World Cup and once every detail is taken care of, we will move towards IPL. We will decide the date after the World Cup. It is most likely in the third or fourth week of December. But it will only be discussed at the IPL GC meeting later on. It will not be on Christmas Eve for sure. We will try to look at a comfortable date for all,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying by Sportskeeda.
Mumbai, Jaipur, Kolkata in contention to host IPL 2024 auction
The report further states that the BCCI has shortlisted Mumbai, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Kochi, and Kolkata which could host the 2024 mini-auction. The auction of the previous edition saw as many as 80 players being sold for INR 167 crore among the 10 franchises in Kochi.
Moreover, franchises also broke the bank for numerous players including the likes of Sam Curran, Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, Nicholas Pooran, and Cameron Green going for record sums in the 2023 auction. Curran became the costliest pick in the auction as he was roped in by Punjab Kings (PBKS) for INR 18.5 crore. The forthcoming edition too will witness teams splurging record sums to sign top-draw cricketers in order to bolster their squads.
