Flashback: The highest total for a tied ODI

Tied encounters are a rarity, especially in the Test and one-day international format. It does take place in the shortest international format more compared to those of the other two. The first-ever ODI game was played way back in the year 1971 and since then, only 41 times the format has witnessed a tied affair. These are quite exciting and entertaining finishes and the clash that ended up with the highest total features in this article.

Two-time ODI World Cup champions West Indies locked horns with the Netherlands in Match No. 18 of Group A of the ongoing ICC WC Qualifiers 2023. The encounter turned out to be a humdinger as it aggregated the biggest total for a tied one-day international contest. Though, the Caribbean side suffered a stunning defeat in the Super Over that followed.

Speaking about how the game unfolded, skipper Scott Edwards won the toss and the Dutch opted to field first at Takashinga Sports Club in Harare, Zimbabwe. The Men in Maroon got off to a flying start as the openers Brandon King and Johnson Charles stitched a 101-run stand.

Netherlands stuns West Indies

The former got dismissed for 76 off 81 while Charles racked up 54 off 55. Captain Shai Hope made 47 but it was hard-hitting Nicholas Pooran who provided the fireworks into the West Indies innings. The destructive left-hander batter smashed an unbeaten 104 off just 65 with nine fours and six maximums. All-rounder Keemo Paul also played a cameo of 47* off 25 as Hope’s side posted a massive total of 374/6 on the board

. In reply, the top-order delivered useful contributions as openers Vikramjit Singh and Max O’Dowd scored 37 and 36 respectively. Wesley Barresi made 27 while Bas de Leede played a hand of 33. There was another centurion in the match as Teja Nidamanuru struck a brilliant 111 off just 76 with 11 fours and three sixes.

Captain Edwards also joined the party as he amassed 67 off 47 while Logan van Beek played a quickfire cameo of 28 off 14 as the Dutch side also ended up with 374/9 in a thrilling finish. What followed was an embarrassment

for the Caribbean side as all-rounder van Beek hammered Jason Holder for 30 runs in the Super Over which included three fours and as many maximums.

Chasing 31, van Beek turned a hero with the ball too as he took two wickets with Windies managing only 8/2. The Dutch shocked West Indies to clinch a thrilling encounter with van Beek winning the Player of the Match award for his all-round heroics.
