Most Test hundreds against India
Australia star batter Steve Smith notched up his record-equalling ninth century during the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final against team India. In the longest format, there have been certain players who have asserted their dominance by scoring centuries on a consistent basis. On that note, we take a look at the cricketers with the most hundreds against team India-
3. Everton Weekes, Jacques Kallis, Michael Clarke, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Clive Lloyd, Alastair Cook | 7
As many as six cricketers have scored their centuries against the Indian side in Test cricket. West Indies’ Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Clive Lloyd, and Everton Weekes have seven Test hundreds against India. Meanwhile, former England skipper Alastair Cook, Australia’s 2015 World Cup-winning captain Michael Clarke, and South Africa’s Jacques Kallis too have as many tons registered against the same side. It is worth mentioning that, Everton Weekes attained the record of scoring seven centuries in mere 10 matches, the least by any player in the elite list.
2. Garfield Sobers, Viv Richards, Ricky Ponting | 8
West Indies greats Garfield Sobers and Viv Richards have eight centuries against India, having played 18 and 28 matches, respectively. Similarly, Ricky Ponting, who has garnered massive runs for Australia, got on level terms with the aforementioned legends with as many tons. However, the Aussie great attained the impressive feat in 29 Test appearances.
1. Steve Smith, Joe Root | 9
England’s Test specialist Joe Root relishes playing in the longest format. Impressively, the right-hander holds the elusive record of most centuries against India with nine under his belt. However, his record was equalled by star Aussie batter Steve Smith in the WTC 2021-23 final when he went on to muster 121 off 268 balls in the first innings. With this he also recorded the second-most centuries scored by a player between the two fierce rivals, standing only behind legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who has 11 in his account.
