Stepped on stumps – All the hit wicket dismissals from World Cup
There are ten ways in which a batsman can get out. One of the most amusing modes amongst them is hit wicket. In 12 World Cups so far, we have seen 10 such dismissals. Unsurprisingly all have been claimed by fast/medium bowlers and five of the batsmen were openers. Here’s the complete list:
10. Roy Fredericks (West Indies)
In the final of the inaugural World Cup at Lords, West Indian opener Roy Fredericks became the first batsman to be dismissed hit wicket in ODIs. Batting on 7, Fredericks hooked Australia’s Dennis Lillie for a six but lost balance while swivelling and disturbed the stumps.
9. Franklyn Dennis (Canada)
Canada were shot down for only 45 runs by England in the 1979 World Cup, yet the innings lasted 40.3 overs. Batting at number three, Dennis was the sole Canadian batsman to reach double figures. On the score of 21, he got out hit wicket to Bob Willis.
8. Maurice Odumbe (Kenya)
One of the most shocking cricket upsets was when Kenya downed West Indies at Pune in the 1996 World Cup. They defended their score of 166 and won the game by 73 runs. However, the Kenyan captain was out hit wicket for 6 on the bowling of Ian Bishop.
7. Gary Kirsten (South Africa)
The quarter-final of 1996 World Cup at Karachi involved West Indies and South Africa. Chasing the total of 265, South Africa lost their opener Gary Kirsten for 3 as Curtly Ambrose dismissed him hit wicket.
6. Joe Harris (Canada)
Paarl, South Africa witnessed one of the biggest mismatches in the 2003 World Cup as Sri Lanka dismissed Canada for only 36 runs. Their captain, Joe Harris, was hit wicket off a delivery from Prabath Nissanka.
5. Maurice Odumbe (Kenya)
History repeated itself at Kimberly in the 2003 World Cup. Maurice Odumbe became the first batsman to be dismissed hit wicket twice in the World Cup. The opposition was the same as that of his first dismissal, West Indies. Bowler on this occasion was Jermaine Lawson.
4. Vusi Sibanda (Zimbabwe)
Chasing 222 against debuting Ireland at Kingston in the 2007 World Cup, Zimbabwean opener Vusi Sibanda was holding one end up with a solid knock. However, on 67, he walked back after getting dismissed hit wicket on the bowling of Andrew White.
3. Regis Chakabva (Zimbabwe)
Another Zimbabwean opener followed Sibanda’s footsteps in the 2015 World Cup. Against UAE at Nelson, Chakabva was out hit wicket off Mohammad Tauqir after scoring 35.
2. Misbah-ul-Haq (Pakistan)
The Pakistani middle-order batsman was out hit wicket thrice in his international career. The third and last such instance occurred in the 2015 World Cup game at Adelaide against Ireland. On the bowling of Alex Cusack, Misbah went deep in the crease after playing a short ball and stepped on his stumps.
1. Martin Guptill (New Zealand)
The latest addition to the list is the New Zealand opener, Martin Guptill. Fending a short ball from Andile Phehlukwayo of South Africa, Guptill lost his balance as he swivelled and stepped on the stumps. He was on 35 runs at that time. He was the only batsman to be out hit wicket in the 2019 World Cup.
