Highest Test totals for Australia in India
India and Australia have one of the greatest rivalries in cricket as the two nations have been a part of several historic games over the years. While Australia have always had an upper hand in their home, India have always been tough to beat in India. Despite this, the Kangaroos have won four series in India in the 76-year-long cricket history between the two nations. Over the years, Australia have put some memorable performances with the bat in India. On that note, let’s take look at the top three highest scores in Tests by Australia in India:
3. 523/7 at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai in October 1956
Restricting India to just 251 in the first innings after they won the toss, Australia had a great opportunity to gain a first innings lead over the hosts. They ended up scoring a massive 523/7 in their first innings and took a lead of 272 runs. Jim Burke (161) and Neil Harvey (140) scored hundreds while Peter Burge also scored a brilliant 83. The game, however, ended in a draw but Australia ended up winning the series by 2-0.
2. 574/7 in Chennai, September 1986
After winning the toss and batting first, Australia put up a marvellous batting performance as they posted a massive 574/7 in their first innings courtesy of a scintillating double hundred from Dean Jones, who scored 210 battling heat and dehydration. Allan Border (106) and David Boon (122) also scored centuries to put Australia in the ascendancy.
The match turned out to be a thriller as chasing 348 in the fourth innings, India were bundled out for 347 and the game turned out to be the only second Test to be tied in the history of the game.
1. 577 in Delhi, November 2008
In reply to India’s massive total of 613/7 in the first innings, Australia posted 577 runs on the board. Michael Clarke top scored with 112 while Ricky Ponting (87) and Matthew Hayden (83). Simon Katich (64) and Michael Hussey (53) also scored half-centuries with the game eventually ending in a draw.
