Reports: Dharamshala could miss out on hosting third Test
The Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala was given the right to host the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia but could be shifted out as the venue as the BCCI believe the stadium might not be ready in time after the recent renovation as reported by The Indian Express.
The Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala is one of the most scenic stadiums in the world. Before the pandemic arrived in early 2020, it last hosted a first-class game. The only Test match hosted at the venue, which was incidentally during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy’s 2016–17 season. India bagged the game in four days and won the series 2-1.
The twin T20 matches between India and Sri Lanka last February were the last international cricket games to be held at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala. Due to the association’s decision to repair the outfield and install a new drainage system, there hasn’t been any cricket played at the venue since then. It is also affirmed that the outfield is still not ready and is dotted with barren spots where the grass cover has not yet established itself.
The inspection committee will ascertain whether the outfield is suitable, secure, and capable of withstanding the damage associated with a Test match. It is also known that the outfield is sand-based, necessitating a thick grass cover, according to specialists.
While the ticket sales have already commenced for the second Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy, which will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi starting on February 17, the BCCI have not released the same for the final two Test. The fourth Test is scheduled at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad from March 9 to 13.
