IPL Auction Review: Gujarat Titans
The title-holders Gujarat Titans made some smart and long-term purchases during the recently-concluded IPL 2023 mini-auction. While the reigning champions did not acquire any high-profile players, they emerged as the most successful franchise with regards to meeting their targets this time around.
Gujarat Titans had entered this year’s mini-auction with a purse of INR 19.25 crore. With 10 slots available, they did not engage in too many bidding wars. Instead, they resorted to playing a smart game by buying some valuable seasoned players from India and overseas.
Notably, GT had traded Lockie Ferguson and Rahmanullah Gurbaz to Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the auction. Meanwhile, Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson’s was Gujarat’s obvious buy at the mega event. They roped him for INR 2 crore.
Wicketkeeper-batter KS Bharat was roped in by the Titans for INR 1.2 crore. The franchise then went on to purchase an uncapped talent Urvil Patel at his base price of INR 20 lakh. Medium-pacer Mohit Sharma was also sold for INR 50 lakh to the Titans.
GT succeeded in acquiring the services of Odean Smith for INR 50 lakh. They made heavy investment in youngster Shivam Mavi, bagging him for a staggering INR 6 crore. They paid a phenomenal INR 4.4 crore to Irish pacer Joshua Little.
At the end of the IPL 2023 mini-auction, the Gujarat Titans’ squad strength increased to 25, including 17 Indian and eight overseas players. They had remaining balance of INR 4.45 crore, which could come in handy for the future if they wish to name replacement players in case of unforeseen situations.
With the GT squad looking well-balanced after having made some noteworthy additions at the recent auction, it now remains to be seen whether Hardik Pandya & Co. have enough firepower in them to ensure a successful title defense next summer.
