Most centuries in winning causes in international cricket
Over the years many accomplished batters have slammed centuries consistently. However, the real deal lies in converting those centuries into match-winning knocks either batting first or while chasing and only a few of the batters have succeeded in getting the job done and achieving this unique feat. On that note, here are the players with the most tons in winning causes:
3. Virat Kohli (50)
Virat Kohli takes the third position on this list. He was nicknamed ‘Chasemaster’ in the last decade due to his ability to set a calculative approach with proper planning while chasing huge targets. Notably, over 50% of those tons have come in chases. The batting megastar has overall registered 72 international centuries and 50 of them having come in a winning cause. Kohli had registered his maiden T20I ton in September against Afghanistan and recently scored his 44th ODI century against Bangladesh both of which turned out to be match-winning knocks.
2. Sachin Tendulkar (53)
A majority of Sachin Tendulkar’s 100 tons in international cricket have ended up on the winning side. One of the finest players to have graced the game, Tendulkar is regarded as the best batter the sport has ever seen. The same could also be evidenced by the consistency and longevity he showed in his 24-year-long illustrious career. As many as 53 of Tendulkar’s tons have helped India in finishing victorious.
1. Ricky Ponting (55)
Australia’s two-time World Cup-winning captain Ricky Ponting occupies the top spot in this category. He was also a very accomplished batter who was capable of single-handedly taking the game away from the opposition. Of the 71 international centuries that Ponting struck, 55 came in winning causes. The most famous one of them all includes that unbeaten 140 against India in the 2003 World Cup final. The Aussies went on to retain the coveted trophy with a comprehensive 125-run victory.
