IND vs ENG: Their past encounters in T20 World Cup
India and England will fight for a spot in the final of the T20 World Cup 2022 as they take on each other in the 2nd semi-final at the Adelaide Oval. India finished as the toppers of their group whereas England beat Sri Lanka to gain access to the knockout game. This will be only the 4th meeting between the T20I heavyweights in the silverware competition. Here’s what transpired in the previous three encounters.
2007 – India beat England by 18 runs
A famous game where Yuvraj Singh struck six sixes in an over against Stuart Broad. India batted first in Durban. Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir added 136 runs for the first wicket. It proved to be the calm before the storm as Yuvraj played the most frantic knock in T20I cricket. His 58 off 16 balls included 3 fours and 7 sixes. He brought up his fifty off just 12 balls – a world record to date. England, to their credit, did not give up the tall chase of 219. Their batters kept attacking but they finished 18 runs short of the target. Irfan Pathan claimed 3/37.
2009 – England won by 3 runs
Lord’s was the venue for India-England’s next meeting in the T20 World Cup. Ravi Bopara 37 (37) and Kevin Pietersen 46 (27) guided England to a first-innings score of 153/7. Indian spinners, Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja, combined to record the figures of 56/5 in their 8 overs. India were rocked early in their chase as Ryan Sidebottom accounted for Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina. The Indian top order failed to get going and the middle order faced an improbable task. In the end, India fell short by just three runs.
2012 – India won by 90 runs
India inflicted a resounding victory over England as the teams fought each other in Colombo. Gautam Gambhir (45), Virat Kohli (40) and Rohit Sharma (55*) contributed heavily as India finished with a score of 170/4 in their 20 overs. In response, England crumbled against the guile of Harbhajan Singh, who was returning to the side after a year’s gap. From 39/2, the English side tumbled to 60/9. Their last pair added 20 runs but it was still a massive defeat for the Englishmen. Harbhajan Singh finished with the figures of 4/12 in his 4 overs.
