Jos Buttler optimistic about England’s semi-finals chances
The Ashes rivalry took centre stage at the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 as hosts and defending champions Australia were to lock horns with Jos Buttler’s England in an epic clash in the Super 12 stage. The 38,000 strong Melbourne Cricket Ground crowd was eager to witness how the game would transpire considering its gravitas.
Coming into this match, both the rival sides had one victory and a loss, which meant that a loss in this fixture would have virtually ended their journey. Moreover, both skipper’s were hoping to fight it out on the pitch to make their case for the last four strong.
The iconic MCG witnessed showers to which the match officials decided to call off the game with the two sides sharing a point each. Disheartened yet optimistic of making it to the semi-finals, English captain Jos Buttler voiced his opinion on the chances.
We have our destiny in our own hands: Jos Buttler
“Australia vs England at the MCG in a must-win World Cup match is as big as it gets in your career, and they are the games you want to be involved in. No matter what the result it’s something you want to experience as a cricketer, and you don’t know how often those opportunities will come around. So, there’s an element of sadness that, win lose or draw, we couldn’t play the match,” said Buttler to BBC.
“We know we are still in the competition and know, to a certain degree, we have our destiny in our own hands. There is still lots of confidence in the group,” he added.
England face in-form New Zealand in the forthcoming fixture at the Gabba in Brisbane on November 1 in another must-win encounter.
