Indian captains to score a century in Asia Cup

India are the most successful side in the history of the Asia Cup with seven triumphs to their name. The Men in Blue started their trophy haul by winning the inaugural edition of the competition back in 1984. Over the period the Indian team has seen several leadership changes, with a few notable names donning the captaincy role. Here are the Indian captains who led the team from the front, scoring a century in the competition.

Sourav Ganguly

The legendary Indian captain Sourav Ganguly became the first Indian skipper to register for a century in the prestigious competition. His solitary ton in the tournament came against Bangladesh in Dhaka in the 2000 Asia Cup. The hosts batted first in the match, setting a respectable total of 249 runs on the board. Indian, in their chase, got off to a rollicking start as Ganguly looked in imperious touch. The southpaw went to amass 135 runs off just 124 deliveries, guiding India to a comfortable eight-wicket victory.

MS Dhoni

India’s most successful captain and one of the most revered skippers of all time, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, followed in the footsteps of Sourav Ganguly in 2008, becoming the second Indian skipper to record a century in the Asia Cup. His moment of glory came in 2008, against Hong Kong after India had gotten off to a flier on the back of half-centuries from Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir. Dhoni took his time initially but ransacked the Hong Kong bowlers, scoring 109 off 96 deliveries.

Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli has slewed numerous oppositions over the last decade, scoring numerous centuries. But one of his most important innings as the skipper of the Indian side came in the 2014 edition of the Asia Cup. India were set a total of 279 runs on a slow track by Bangladesh and they were off to a decent start but stumbled after two quick wickets, bringing skipper Kohli at the crease. The batting ace extinguished all Bangladesh hopes, scoring a sensational 136 runs off 122 deliveries to guide India to victory.

Rohit Sharma

The current Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is the fourth and latest Indian one to enter in this list after his blistering ton against arch-rivals Pakistan in the 2018 Asia Cup Super 4 fixture. Rohit, who was standing in for the absent Virat Kohli, put the Pakistani bowlers to the sword with a chanceless ton in the high-profile clash. Chasing a modest target of 238 runs, India never gave their opposition a chance as Rohit and his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan stitched a mammoth 210-run stand for the first wicket, registering their respective centuries as India got home in a canter with more than ten overs to spare.
