CPL 2022: David Miller replaces Jason Holder as Barbados Royals captain
Veteran South African batter David Miller has been named the new captain of Barbados Royals for the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2022 season. Miller replaces West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder, who still remains a crucial part of the Royals. Apart from Holder, they have retained key players such as Kyle Mayers, Oshane Thomas, Obed McCoy, and Hayden Walsh Jr. Royals have also signed another South African star Quinton de Kock and Afganisthan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
Miller last played CPL for Jamaica Tallawahs in 2018 and also represented St Lucia Zouks in 2016. He has scored 332 runs in just 15 CPL matches at an impressive strike rate of 146.90. Meanwhile, in IPL 2022, the explosive middle-order batter scored 481 runs at a strike rate of 142.73 and guided the Gujarat Titans to the title. He is excited to join Barbados Royals, which is co-owned by one of the stakeholders of his former IPL team Rajasthan Royals. He stated that it is a privilege to captain the Royals and is looking forward to working with the team for the 2022 season, which starts on the 31st of August.
“During my time at the Royals in the IPL, I always felt very valued and have been able to establish a deep connection with the team. It is an exciting time for me to come to the Barbados Royals and a privilege to have been appointed as the captain. It is a team that has an abundance of young and experienced talent from the Caribbean, and I am looking forward to working with the entire group to get down to achieving our objectives for the 2022 season,” David Miller said.
We are all delighted to have signed David Miller: Trevor Penny
Barbados Royals, the two-time CPL champions, finished the 2021 edition at the last position and the 2020 edition at the second-last place. The addition of the in-form Proteas duo will be a big boost to their chances for the upcoming season. Head coach Trevor Penney, who is an assistant coach at Rajasthan Royals, praised Miller’s ability to read the situations on the pitch and is excited to work with him again.
