IPL 2022: What will happen if final clash gets washed out?

The IPL 2022 has reached its business end with the four best teams- Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals, Lucknow Super Giants, and the Royal Challengers Bangalore making the playoffs, of this two-month-long grueling tournament. The Rajasthan Royals will be facing Gujarat in the Qualifier 1 on May 24 for a place in the final while Lucknow and Bangalore face off in the Eliminator on May 25 where the loser goes home.

Ahead of the playoffs that get underway at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata, here’s all you need to know about the reserve day rules that will come into action if rain plays a spoilsport in the final clash. It is to be noted that there is a predicted thunderstorm alert for the Qualifier 1 clash between Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals in Kolkata.

What are the Reserve Day rules for IPL 2022?

There are no reserve days for the two Qualifiers and the Eliminator. Therefore, “if one innings is complete but no play is possible in the second, the DLS method will be applied to determine the match result” according to reports in ESPNcricinfo. If the game is abandoned, the team finishing higher in the points table will go ahead.

As far as the reserve day of the final on May 29 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is concerned, the report has stated that in case the decider is not completed on the originally scheduled day, then it would be wrapped on the reserve day. The reports further added that the contest will resume exactly from that same point where it was halted the previous day and any match recalculations done with the game not restarting on the previous day will be completely ignored.

“In case no play is possible after the toss in the final, teams will have a fresh toss on the reserve day. The IPL has said the reserve day will comprise the same amount of playing time – five hours and 20 minutes including the two extra hours available in case of any disruption or rain.”, the report adds.
