IPL 2022: 5 Retained players who got dropped in league stage

A franchise shows a lot of faith and trust before retaining a cricketer ahead of a brand new season. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), few players were retained by their respective franchises before the auction but they failed to live up to their expectations by performing poorly in the ongoing 2022 edition.

Let’s take a look at 5 retained players who got dropped during the league stage of the IPL:

1.Venkatesh Iyer

After scoring 370 runs in ten innings in IPL 2021, Venkatesh Iyer was retained by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of the mega auction 2022. But the left-handed batter struggled miserably as he managed to score just 132 runs in the first nine matches at an average of 16.5 and strike rate of 97.8 for KKR in the 2022 season. He got dropped from the side for two games before making a return.

2.Varun Chakaravarthy

Varun Chakaravarthy took 35 wickets in total in the 2020 and 2021 editions and was retained by KKR ahead of their 2022 campaign. But the spinner managed to pick up just four wickets at a terrible average of strike rate of 61.8 and 42.0 respectively. He got the axe for three matches before he returned against Mumbai Indians (MI).

3.Yashasvi Jaiswal

Rajasthan Royals (RR) player Yashasvi Jaiswal had scored 249 runs in ten innings in 2021. The 2008 season winners RR decided to retain him for IPL 2022 but the batter couldn’t quite live up to the expectations of his franchise as he amassed just 25 runs in the opening three matches. He was removed from the team for the next seven games but made a solid comeback against Punjab Kings by scoring 68 runs.

4.Abdul Samad

Abdul Samad was one of the three players retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) along with captain Kane Williamson and speedster Umran Malik. Samad scored just four and zero in the first two encounters against Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) respectively and got dropped.  He still hasn’t featured in the games after that as the big-hitter failed to make a mark in his first two games.

5.Moeen Ali

Moeen Ali scored 357 runs in 15 innings in the title-winning 2021 season with CSK. He was retained along with MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ruturaj Gaikwad. But the all-rounder amassed just 87 runs in his first five matches at an average of 17.4 and strike rate of 124.3. He took no wickets in eight overs in these games. He got dropped from the team before making a return Delhi Capitals (DC).
