4 batters to be Retired Out in T20 cricket
There are very few instances in T20 cricket when a batter has decided to ‘Retired Out.’ As per the ICC’s rules, a batter is retired out in T20 cricket, but he/she will have to inform the umpire about the decision. However, the batter can only come to bat afterwards, if he/she gets a nod from the opposition skipper. On that note, let us take a look at four batters to be retired out in T20 cricket.
Ravichandran Ashwin (Rajasthan Royals)
Ravichandran Ashwin became the first player in Indian Premier League (IPL) history to be retired out. The right-handed batter was playing on 28 off 23 balls when took the decision. The tactic saw Riyan Parag come to the crease with 10 balls remaining to replace Ashwin and he helped RR post a winning score of 165/6 from their 20 overs.
Shahid Afridi (Pakistanis)
Explosive veteran batter Shahid Afridi has also been involved in retiring himself out. The right-handed batter used the rule in 2010, during a tour game between Pakistanis and Northampton, the hard-hitting batter decided to end his innings after smashing 42 off just 14 balls.
Sonam Tobgay (Bhutan)
In 2019, Bhutan were taking on the Maldives during the South Asian Games Men’s Cricket Competition. Bhutanese batter Sonam Tobgay retired himself out, during the final ball of the 18th over after playing a struggling innings of 24 off 35 balls. However, the next batter did not fare any better as the batting added just three more runs in the final over and eventually lost the game.
Sunzamul Islam (Comilla Warriors)
Comilla Warriors were taking on Chattogram Challengers in a group stage match of the 2019 Bangladesh Premier League. Chasing a target of 160, Comilla Warriors lost their prominent batter, Dawid Malan. New batter Sunzamul Islam walked in but decided to walk back without facing a single ball. Afghanistan spinner Mujeed Ur Rahman came in next and he smashed a boundary to take his side home.
