IPL 2022: Tournament broadcast goes off in Sri Lanka amid economic crisis
The IPL 2022 is in full swing with all the teams trying their level best to be on top as the competition heats up with each passing day. This edition of the Indian Premier League is a two-month-long tournament with the addition of two new teams – Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans.
While the IPL 2022 is being broadcast all over the world not only on TV and radio but also on various live streaming platforms, one of the neighboring countries of India has stopped the telecast of the marquee tournament completely. The ongoing T20 competition is not being broadcast in Sri Lanka due to the ongoing economic crisis which has affected the day-to-day lives of its citizens.
Here’s why IPL 2022 is not being telecast in Sri Lanka
According to reports in Jani News, the ongoing financial crisis in Sri Lanka has not only affected the general public but has adversely affected the IPL 2022 broadcast as well. The report further adds that the prestigious T20 league has also stopped getting media coverage with two of the island nation’s popular newspapers not publishing any stories regarding the tournament.
The print media “is struggling to meet the cost of paper” and the news is being published online for the time being. As far as electronic media is concerned, the crisis has worsened so much that many TV channels have also been shut down. Even though the Sri Lankan cricket fans along with the local channels have demanded the broadcast rights of the IPL, the sorry state of the economic situation in the country is such that the tournament cannot be broadcast.
Sri Lanka is facing its worst-ever economic crisis. The Rajapaksa administration is not in a position to pay for essential imports due to a shortage in foreign currency, as the result of which the prices of basic commodities have skyrocketed and inflation is on the rise.
