IPL 2022: All you need to know about the latest playing conditions
IPL 2022 kicks off on March 26 with the last edition’s finalists Chennai Super Kings and the Kolkata Knight Riders locking horns in the curtain-raiser at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. All the 10 participating teams have been divided into two virtual groups for the two-month-long tournament.
Days before the commencement of the 15th edition of the marquee tournament, new playing conditions were made official for this year. Without further ado, here’s a look at all of them.
DRS rule: This has to be arguably the biggest change in the playing conditions of the IPL 2022 and is with regards to the Decision Review System (DRS).
Unlike the previous editions, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to increase the number of referrals per team to two as compared to one.
New batter rule: As per this rule, the incoming batter will take strike after the outgoing batter has been caught irrespective of whether the batters have crossed or not. This is one of the revised rules made by the custodians of cricket, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) earlier this month.
It now remains to be seen how the teams will get used to this new rule which could be a decisive factor when it comes down to a close game in the tournament.
The Super Over rule: This is one of the biggest rules introduced in the 2022 season by the BCCI as far as the tied matches are concerned.
If Super Over cannot be played under any unavoidable circumstances, or if another one cannot be held to break the tie after the first one, the team finishing higher in the league table will be declared the winner.
COVID-19 rule: The COVID-19 rule will be very handy for a particular team in case of any unforeseen situations that may arise as the tournament progresses.
The national cricket board at its discretion will attempt to reschedule the match for later on this season should a particular team be unable to field a playing XI due to COVID-19 issues. If the problem is serious then the matter will be referred to the IPL Technical Committee and they will make a decision accordingly.
