Reports: More than 25 percent crowd likely to be allowed in stadiums for IPL 2022
The IPL 2022 is all set to get underway on March 26 as the last season’s champions Chennai Super Kings will be locking horns with Kolkata Knight Riders in the curtain-raiser at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The two-month tournament will entirely be held in India across four venues in two cities of Maharashtra – Mumbai and Pune, respectively.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that there could be more than 25% capacity crowds at the venues in the 15th edition of the marquee tournament. At the same time, it has also been confirmed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that there will be more spectators as the tournament progresses, compared to the attendance in the initial matches.
Going forward the stadiums will have more fans than initial games, says BCCI official
“That is our understanding. Going forward the stadiums will have more fans than initial games. With Covid cases coming down by the day, we are hoping more people will be in the stands,” said an office-bearer of the BCCI as quoted by Cricbuzz.
After two seasons, the cash-rich event will finally not be staged in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). However, in January it was speculated that the tournament could be organized in South Africa, and there were talks going on regarding the same between the BCCI and Cricket South Africa (CSA), before all such rumors were laid to rest after the official schedule of the IPL 2022 was revealed earlier this month.
The IPL will see 70 matches and the number of teams have been increased to 10 with the introduction of two new franchises – Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants, respectively. The defending champions CSK will be eyeing a record-equaling fifth IPL crown this time around.
With all the participating teams having built their respective squads at the two-day mega auction in Bengaluru last month, it would be interesting to see which team would go on to have a memorable season.
