Top 5 highest successful run-chases in Women’s World Cup
Team Australia recently created a record after successfully chasing a score of 278 against India in the 2022 Women’s World Cup. There have been several other instances in the World Cup where the chasing side have showed composure and reached the target put in front of them. On that note, let us look at the top five highest successful run-chase in the Women’s World Cup.
Australia (WC 2022)
On the back of half-centuries from batters Yastika Bhatia, Harmanpreet Kaur and skipper Mithali Raj, India posted a competitive total of 277 runs in their 50 overs. However, the target was not enough for Australia as Rachael Haynes, Alyssa Healy and skipper Meg Lanning punished the Indian bowlers. The Women in Yellow did not stutter even a bit in their chase as they completely dominated the Indians chasing the score with three balls left.
Australia (2017)
Riding on the heroics of Chamari Athapaththu (178 off 143 balls), Sri Lanka managed to post a competitive total of 257/9 in the group stage match played against Australia in Women’s World Cup 2017. In reply, Sri Lanka did manage to taste some success as opener Beth Mooney got out on a duck. However, it was one-way traffic after that. Skipper Meg Lanning (152 off 135 balls) and other opener Nicole Bolton (60 off 71) balls helped the Australians to chase down the total in 43.5 overs.
Sri Lanka (2013)
Playing against England in a group stage match, Sri Lanka managed to restrict England at 238/8 in their 50 overs. Sri Lanka then had a perfect start as their openers stitched a hundred-run stand. However, the batting side suffered a collapse. From 103/0, Sri Lanka were reduced to 206/7. However, wicket-keeper batter Dilani Manodara held her nerves as she guided her side to victory in the last over of the match.
South Africa (2022)
Chasing a target of 236 runs, South Africa managed to come on top against the defending champions in the ongoing 2022 Women’s World Cup. Batting first, England scored 235 runs on the back of the fifties from Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones.
In reply, South Africa had a good start with handy contributions from opener Laura Wolvaardt, Tazmin Brits and skipper Sune Luus. The defending champions did manage to get quick wickets, however, wicket-keeper-batter Trisha Chetty and pacer Shabnim Ismail managed to get their side home in last over of the match with four balls remaining.
West Indies (2013)
West Indies successfully managed to chase a target of 231 runs set by South Africa during the 2013 Women’s World Cup. Winning the toss, South Africa opted to bat first in Cuttack. Hefty contributions from the top and middle-order ensured that the batting side ended their 50 over quota after making 230 runs. In reply, opener Kycia Knight (46 off 68 balls) and senior batter Stafanie Taylor (75 off 78 balls) ensured that the Women in Maroon win the contest in 45.3 overs.
