Edhen Apple Tom- The next big thing in Kerala cricket
Tom got a surprise call after being included in Kerala’s Ranji Trophy squad. The emerging pacer who was not even in the preliminary squad went on to win former India bowler and coach Tinu Yohannan’s confidence with his speed as a net bowler for the team.
Edhen was born in Dubai. Cricket was in his blood as the youngster’s father Apple Tom Phillips was also a speedster. It was at the age of eight that his dad had enrolled him at former Kerala all-rounder Sony Cheruvathur’s coaching camp. Cheruvathur saw the potential in him to become a fast bowler and played an instrumental role in fixing his technical issues.
It is his sheer pace during the Ranji Trophy camp which made coach Tinnu Yohanan believe that the youngster is prepared to prove his mettle at the senior level and thus, he made his way into the Kerala team in the ongoing edition of the prestigious domestic cricket tournament. Apart from his four-wicket haul in the first innings, the promising cricketer also made a statement in the second with a couple of scalps to his name with figures of 2/30 to finish with six wickets on his maiden appearance in first-class cricket. It now remains to be seen whether the teenager can make the ball do the talking throughout the competition.
