Justin Langer – Glittering achievements of the former Aussie coach

An era has come to an end in Australian cricket with Justin Langer stepping down as the national team’s head coach. Langer’s tenure saw many ups and downs as under him, the Aussie side recorded some memorable wins alongside suffering some humiliating defeats. However, nothing can defy the fact that the former opener did a commendable job after taking over the reins at a difficult time.

Former coach Darren Lehmann had stepped down in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal in March 2018. With big guns like David Warner and Steve Smith facing bans, Lehmann’s departure was probably the last thing the Aussie team wanted at that time. Then came Justin Langer in the picture, determined to serve the national team once again, but in a new role.

The start of his tenure was horrendous as Australia suffered a 0-5 whitewash in the ODI series against England. The next few assignments weren’t too fruitful either as many believed Australia’s heydays are history now. However, Langer instilled confidence in the side and took them to many wins.

3-2 Series win against India

Australia were trailing 0-2 in the 2019 away ODI series against India. While many backed the Men in Blue to record a whitewash, the visitors had other plans. Despite missing services of Warner, Smith and Mitchell Starc, the Aaron Finch-led team scripted a memorable comeback and won the remaining games to clinch the series 3-2.

Retaining Ashes urn in 2019

After clinching the 2019 World Cup, England had their eyes on the Ashes urn. As they were hosting the series, many backed them to get the glory. However, the visitors had other plans. The likes of Steve Smith and Pat Cummins were phenomenal throughout the tour as the series ended at a 2-2 draw. As the Aussies won the previous series, the urn remained with them.

2021 T20 World Cup triumph

Not many backed Australia to go a long way at the 2021 T20 World Cup as the side had endured a horrendous time in its recent T20 assignments. However, the Aussies put up a brilliant show in the gala tournament and got the glory. It must be noted that Australia suffered a thumping eight-wicket defeat against England in the league stage. However, they bounced back and lifted the elusive title.

Ashes 2021-22 triumph

Langer’s last assignment was a memorable win as Australia thumped England 4-0 in the home Ashes series. It must be noted that former Tim Paine stepped down from his role just days before the crucial series in awake of the infamous ‘sexting’ scandal. However, Pat Cummins took over and embraced the leadership challenge with brilliance.
