IPL 2022: Chennai Super Kings – SWOT Analysis

The Chennai Super Kings picked a squad of 25 players in the 2022 IPL mega auction. The four-time IPL champions had INR 2.95 Crore remaining at the end of the mega auction, and have picked 17 Indian and 8 overseas players. Ravindra Jadeja is the highest-paid CSK player and will draw a salary of INR 16 Crore. In this article, let us do a SWOT Analysis of the CSK side.

Strength

CSK have always focused on maintaining their core squad, and that has proven to be successful for the franchise in the past. And, that is exactly what the ‘Men in Yellow’ did this year in the auction. They bought back their ‘core’ of Ambati Rayudu, Dwayne Bravo, Robin Uthappa and Deepak Chahar. And, their core is their biggest strength.

Weaknesses

CSK have an ageing middle order, which comprises MS Dhoni, Dwayne Bravo, Ambati Rayudu and Robin Uthappa are nearing the end of their careers. So, the CSK middle order might become wobbly in the next two IPL seasons, as a number of these veterans might not be around even two years down the line.

Opportunities:

CSK have picked several fresh faces in Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Prashant Solanki, Hari Nishanth and N Jagadeesan. And, just like how Ruturaj Gaikwad turned out to be a wonderful find for them, CSK can groom these youngsters for a long haul with the franchise.

Threats:

What if the superstars who made CSK such a formidable force are not available in the next three years? It is highly unlikely that Dhoni might be around even two years down the line, and the same is the case with several of CSK’s core squad members like Bravo, Uthappa and Rayudu.

So, the experience that has brought CSK so much success might vanish all of a sudden, and the biggest threat is the fact that all these players who have served the franchise might walk into the sunset at the same time.
