Beating India will be the biggest Test win in my playing career: Dean Elgar
Having made a stellar show at the Wanderers, the Proteas skipper Dean Elgar is highly motivated to get his A-game into play and win their home series 2-1 despite India being the favorites. The left-hander played a stupendous knock in the final innings in Johannesburg with an unbeaten 96 to take his home in a chase of 240 and keep the series alive 1-1. The action has now shifted to Cape Town while Elgar is expected to continue his fighting knocks in tough times.
After losing the first Test comfortably in Centurion, it took a lot of character from South Africa to stage a comeback and the gritty knock from Elgar was a pure example of the never-give-up attitude from the Proteas. However, India is a quality side that will be raring to make a statement on South African soil after conquering England and Australia.
We’ve just not had a lot of things go our way: Dean Elgar
Elgar was quite convinced that a win at the Newlands would be the biggest victory for him in his Test career as a captain and as a player. He mentioned that the players have been training hard and they haven’t done much wrong so far despite being on the losing side at times. Kagiso Rabada led the pace attack with an excellent spell of bowling in the second innings at Wanderers and his return to form will be huge to the side.
“It will be the biggest Test win in my playing career so far. Obviously, that comes with the leadership and captaincy now having a bit more influence with regards to our playing group.”
“From a player’s group, it would be massive for us. I think we’ve put in so much hard work these last few months and we’ve been playing pretty good cricket up until now. We’ve just not had a lot of things go our way. You need that sometimes, we’ve been doing everything right. We’ve been ticking the boxes we set ourselves.” Elgar told in the pre-match interview ahead of the third Test
The 34-year-old also noted that it will be a huge effort to win against India, despite being a home series. South Africa has never lost a Test series at home to India which could well be turned around in a few days’ time.
“What we did in the last Test speaks massive amounts for us leading into this Test. But we can’t look too far ahead, the moment you do that you’re going to lose the plot. For us to win the series 2-1 will be huge, beating the world’s number one side even though it’s in your own backyard, it’s still going to speak massive amounts for our player’s group and the Proteas badge.” he added
