Ramnaresh Sarwan appointed as selector of West Indies team till 2024
Former West Indies captain Ramnaresh Sarwan will join the selection board of the Cricket West Indies (CWI). He would be remaining in this position until June 2024. During this time, Sarwan would be responsible for selecting both men’s senior and youth teams.
Sarwan would be joining the selection panel for the senior team headed by former West Indies legend Desmond Haynes and head coach Phil Simmons. On the youth panel, he would be joining former West Indies leg-spinner, Robert Haynes. Cricket West Indies announced his appointment after the board meeting on Thursday.
“I want to thank CWI and everyone involved for giving me this opportunity to again serve West Indies cricket, as a member of the selection panels. I’m passionate about the game of cricket and especially West Indies cricket and once asked to contribute, I didn’t hesitate,” Sarwan said as quoted by Outlook.
“I look forward to working with my colleagues, The Most Hon. Dr. Desmond Haynes and Mr. Robert Haynes, and the two Head Coaches, as well as everyone else involved in the development of this sport we love and respect so much,” he added.
Ramnaresh Sarwan to select team for the next four ICC events
Sarwan would be responsible for selecting the team for the next four ICC tournaments – two T20 World Cups in 2022 and 2024, ODI World Cup in 2023, and the World Test Championship Final in 2023. Considering the performance of the West Indies in the recently completed T20 World Cup, Sarwan would be under immense pressure.
Sarwan made his Test debut in May 2000 and went on to play 87 Test matches where he made 5842 runs at an average of 40.01. He represented West Indies in 181 ODIs and made 5804 runs at an average of 42.67. The former captain of the West Indies side also played 18 T20Is and was a part of the squad that took part in the inaugural edition of the T20 WC.
Sarwan announced his retirement from international cricket in September 2016. He played for Guyana Amazon Warriors in CPL 2014 and then represented Trinbago Knight Riders in 2016. Sarwan was a part of the Kings XI Punjab franchise in the first edition of the IPL and played in four matches where he scored 73 runs.
