IPL 2022 Retention: Rules, Live Streaming, Likely Retentions
The 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will become a grander affair, as 2 new teams will join in. And, the mega auction will also take place ahead of the 15th edition of the Indian T20 league.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that each IPL franchise will be allowed to retain a maximum of 4 players in their squad ahead of the mega auctions. And, the franchises have to submit the list of retained players by 30th November 2021. Here is every detail you need to know about the mega auctions.
Maximum players that can be retained by the IPL franchises
Each IPL franchise can retain a maximum of 4 cricketers. And, out of the 4 retained players, only a maximum of 2 players can be overseas players.
Cost of each retained player
This will be based on the number of players retained by the IPL franchise. For e.g., if an IPL franchise decides to retain a maximum of 4 players ahead of the IPL auctions, then the total purse available for the 4 players will be INR 42 Crores. The first retained player will get INR 16 Crores, the 2nd will be paid INR 12 Crores, the 3rd will get a sum of INR 8 Crores, and the 4th will be paid INR 6 Crores.
If a franchise retains 3 players, then the purse will be INR 33 Crores, with the first retained player getting INR 15 Crores, and with the second and third retained players getting INR 11 and 7 Crores respectively.
If a franchise decided to retain 2 players, then the two players will be paid INR 14 and 10 Crores respectively. And finally, if only 1 player is retained by an IPL franchise, then he will draw a salary of INR 14 Crores.
Players likely to be retained by each franchise
Let us come to the next question. Who are the players who are likely to be retained by each of the franchises? According to the Indian Express, the Chennai Super Kings have stated that they will retain their skipper MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad and one out of Moeen Ali and Sam Curran.
KKR are likely to retain the West Indian duo of Sunil Narine and Andre Russell. RCB will retain their star batsman Virat Kohli, and with AB de Villiers announcing his retirement, the ‘Men in Red’ might opt to retain Yuzvendra Chahal and Glenn Maxwell. Rajasthan Royals might retain 3 players in skipper Sanju Samson, and the England duo of Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler.
The Mumbai Indians will surely retain their skipper Rohit Sharma, followed by their pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah. While Kieron Pollard is likely to be retained, the Mumbai side will also want to retain the services of their young gun Ishan Kishan. The Delhi Capitals will retain their skipper Rishabh Pant, followed by Prithvi Shaw, Axar Patel and Anrich Nortje.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) might retain 2 players in Rashid Khan and Kane Williamson, while the Punjab Kings will retain their captain KL Rahul, if he does not want to move to any other franchise, followed by Mayank Agarwal.

Players picked by the new franchises
Now, two new IPL franchises will join. And, how will they pick their players? Well, after the 8 existing franchises have retained their respective players, all the other players will be released into the auction pool. And, from this list, the 2 IPL franchises can pick 3 players each ahead of the auctions.
When and Where to Watch 2022 IPL auction
The IPL mega auction will be held in December or early January and will be streamed live on the Star Sports Network and Hotstar.
