ICC promises funding hike to Bangladesh cricket from 2023 onwards
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has promised Bangladesh cricket a hike in funding from 2023 onwards, Nazmul Hasan Papon, the Bangladesh Cricket Board president, said on Saturday, September 4. The BCB chief stated that the fund they get from the ICC isn’t justified and they are expecting funding similar to that of Cricket Australia.
He also said that the Fixed Deposit Receipt (FDR) has surpassed Tk 900 Crore during his tenure in Bangladesh cricket. Hasan stated that BCB has been able to save a lot of money over the past few months or so.
Bangladesh Cricket Board president shares the details
“The (ICC) funding will increase in the future – from 2023, we will get much more. From the next cycle, Bangladesh will get the same amount as Australia. We are getting the same amount as Zimbabwe now. I did challenge the ICC but there was no result as the revenue cycle had already begun,” Nazmul was quoted as saying in Cricbuzz.
“The BCB’s money (savings) has increased a lot. We have earned it all. All of our sponsors are local, not foreign. We now have an FDR worth Tk 900 crore,” he added.
As per the papers submitted to the BCB councillors, the BCB received funds worth BDT 832.68 crore until the 2019-20 financial year. The board had saved a total amount of BDT 52.91 crore last year. Even as they earned TK 332.82 crore, they spent Tk 279.91.
Moreover, the BCB has a combined tally of BDT 147.43 crores in savings bank account and cash. The cricket body also earned an FDR worth Tk 545 crore during the same time period. The papers were given to the BCB councillors during the last Annual General Meeting on August 26.
For the time being, the Bangladesh national team is busy playing a five-match T20I series against New Zealand. Having already won the first two games at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, the Tigers are in a commanding position in the series.
The third game of the series is set to take place on Sunday, September 5 at the same venue and Bangladesh will be eyeing an unassailable lead. Prior to the New Zealand series, the Tigers had beaten Australia 4-1.
