Harsha Bhogle reveals why he pulled out of World Test Championship commentary panel

Harsha Bhogle

While the ICC confirmed the news of the English commentary panel for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final, one prominent name was missing from the list, Harsha Bhogle. Over the years, Bhogle has given cricket fans all over the world sheer joy and happiness by his brilliant use of words and observation of the game. Being from a non-cricketing background, he has carved a niche for himself among some prominent names in the commentary department.

The 59-year-old’s commentary during India’s tour Down Under where he said, “India had one batsman, one hamstring and one hand to save the match in the third Test at Sydney”, was appreciated by one and all.

Sadly, during the final between India and New Zealand, Bhogle won’t be a part of the spectacle. While everyone was left wondering as to why the experienced commentator had opted out, the man himself has cleared the air by putting a post on Twitter. As with the COVID-19 protocol, cricket has not been the same. With bio-bubbles and quarantine restrictions, the players are getting more and more worn out and fatigued. Mental health has become all the more paramount during these tough times.

Harsha Bhogle not part of the WTC Final commentary team due to quarantine norms

Bhogle, who has travelled a lot since 2020 and has been away from family due to strict bio-bubble norms, has now managed to take a break, citing 27-28 days away from family are too much for one game. Mental health was one of the most talked-about subjects especially during the pandemic which many players from various nations spoke about.

With the situation only gradually improving with time, players and the broadcasters are figuring their way out as to when they need to take a backseat. Rightfully, Bhogle has taken a correct decision which he feels was much-needed.

Meanwhile, the Board of the Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials had announced last month that players can travel with their families for the close to four-month tour. This move from the BCCI was widely appreciated considering the long duration of the tour that will go on until September.
