Umpires will be punished if their role turns out to be questionable: BCB

It was only a few days back when Bangladesh’s player Shakib Al Hasan was caught up in a big controversy while he displayed some unacceptable behavior on the field. Shakib was caught having heated arguments with the on-field umpire and even uprooted stumps out of frustration during one of the matches of Dhaka Premier League. However, later, it came out that there was a matter of some biased umpiring that infuriated the cricketer.

In the latest turn of events, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has stated that they would punish umpires if their decision turns out to be questionable. A five-member committee has already been in place to look into the matter. Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) and BCB met with the nine captains of DPL and heard their views over umpiring.

Three captains couldn’t attend the virtual meeting as they were busy in their matches. Sheikh Sohail, the BCB director, and member of the investigation committee stated, “Nine captains were present at the meeting. 3 captains were late to return from BKSP so they couldn’t join,” as quoted by bdcrictime.

Sohail further added that five members from the investigation team also joined the virtual meeting. Apart from him, the other four members are, CCDM Chairman Kazi Inam Ahmed, two other BCB directors Jalal Yunus and Naimur Rahman Durjoy, and Rakibul Hasan, BCB chief match referee.

“There has been a lot of talk on the umpiring issue. The captains said how the umpiring standard can be improved. We also seek suggestions from them on how to prevent controversy. We have heard all their statements. We will sit with the other three captains tomorrow” .

We have made a lot of progress in cricket in the last seven-eight years: BCB

“We have made a lot of progress in cricket in last seven-eight years. We always want the best. If the role of umpires in the investigation is questioned, they will also be punished if necessary,” Sohail added.

Talking about Shakib’s event, he has issued a public apology for his behaviour. However, BCB staged a drama in front of journalists while announcing his punishment.
