BCCI agrees for more ICC events in the next cycle to have longer IPL window
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) earlier stated that they plan to have only one ICC event per year, a decision that shocked many. The Indian board was not in favour of having many ICC events in the year but their clear stance has been revealed now. In the latest turn of events, it has been reported that BCCI’s decision was simply a ‘trade-off’ to increase the window for the IPL.
The BCCI wishes to broaden the IPL window from next year. On the other hand, in ICC’s general meeting on June 1, it has been announced that they will expand and host one event every year. Their decision is contrary to the BCCI’s approach of ‘less is more.’ Now, it has also been reported that BCCI has agreed on this trade-off as it seeks to expand the IPL window. Since two new teams are supposed to join the lucrative league next year, more number of matches will be added which means a longer window.
As per the latest reports, BCCI has got ICC’s informal approval in their plan to add two new teams in the IPL 2022. Earlier, BCCI, CA, and ECB were not in favour of increasing ICC events and bringing back the Champions Trophy but now all the three boards have to shake hands with ICC as per a report by Cricbuzz.
Sourav Ganguly led BCCI earlier suggested ICC to go with ‘less is more’ approach
Sourav Ganguly even stated that ICC should also follow ‘less is more’ approach just like the FIFA World Cup model. However, things are completely changed now.
“Sometimes less is more in life. So, we have got to be careful with that. And the football World Cup happens every four years and you see the madness. That’s a decision the ICC has to make I’m not in a position to talk or comment on it. As and when I get an opportunity to be a part of the discussion, I will speak,” stated BCCI president Sourav Ganguly back in 2019.
