Kane Williamson one of four New Zealand players likely to be rested for the second Test
The first Test of the two-match series between England and New Zealand ended in a draw. Thus, both the teams will square off against each other in the series-decider from June 10 to June 14. It is speculated that going into the second Test match, New Zealand can make as many as four changes to their squad.
The changes can be made to give some rest to the players before they face India in the final of the World Test Championship. There are reports that suggest that NZ skipper Kane Williamson is the biggest name to be rested for the second Test match against England.
Spinner Ajaz Patel and all-rounder Daryl Mitchell are expected to play the second Test, while Will Young can act as a replacement for Williamson. Trent Boult is also expected to return to the playing XI after sitting out in the first Test. The name reason behind the exclusion of Kane is his elbow injury. He faced a niggle in his elbow earlier this year but seemed fit as he featured in IPL 2021 and the first Test match against England.
However, New Zealand coach Gary Stead revealed that the skipper’s “elbow is still niggling away a wee bit”.
The Kiwis don’t want to take any risk for the WTC and thus are planning to rest the captain. In his absence, Tom Latham is likely to lead the Blackcaps.
There is an opportunity to win a Test series in England: Trent Boult
Trent Boult wasn’t a part of New Zealand’s camp in the first Test fixture as he arrived in the United Kingdom late and was completing his mandatory quarantine period. However, the pacer is back in the camp for the last Test and is rooting for his team to script a historic win.
Notably, New Zealand hasn’t won a Test series in England for the past 22 years.
“There is an opportunity to win a Test series in England. It’s been a long time. Looking forward to the challenge. I thought the guys played tremendously well at Lord’s. The boys are gelling nicely and hopefully, it will be a big week,” Trent Boult said during a virtual press conference.
