On this day in 1994: Brian Lara posts the highest individual score in first-class history
In the game of cricket, a lot of records are made and broken, but some records are special. There are some records that remain intact for a long time. Today we are going to tell you about one such record achieved on this day back in 1994.
Charismatic Caribbean batsman Brian Lara was in the limelight throughout his career. He has many records to his name in cricket. This includes historic innings of 501 runs in a First-Class match. Lara had touched that height exactly 27 years ago on this day i.e. June 6, 1994, which no batsman has reached to date.
Lara played for Warwickshire in English county cricket, scoring an unbeaten 501 against Durham at Edgbaston. With this, Lara became the highest scorer in First-Class cricket. He surpassed Hanif Mohammad of Pakistan who had earlier played a 499-run knock. Lara, who came out to bat at number three, stood at the crease for 474 minutes and hit 62 fours and 10 sixes in his innings of 427 balls.
Lara also got some chances during the historic knock. He was bowled out for 12 runs, but it was a no-ball, while the wicketkeeper dropped his catch for 18 runs. In this four-day match, one day’s play could not be played due to rain, while in the remaining three days, only the first innings of each of the teams were completed. Durham declared their first innings at 556 for eight, thanks to a double century from John Morris. He scored 204 runs off 287 balls.
In reply, Warwickshire declared the innings at 810 runs at the loss of four wickets. Lara also made a record of scoring seven centuries in eight First-Class innings during this period. He had scored 375 runs in Tests about two months back. Although his record was broken by Matthew Hayden in 2003, he again became Test cricket’s top scorer after scoring 400 against England at Antigua in April 2004.
