Future captains: Three young cricketers who can lead their team in future

It is important for every cricket team in the world to groom young players who can potentially take over the mantle of leadership from the current captain of a side when he decides to step down. And, with world cricket brimming with talent, there are many young players who can be given the captaincy of their respective sides.

In this article, let us look at three young players who can lead their respective teams in the future.

3. Ollie Pope

At the age of 23, Ollie Pope has already impressed the cricketing fraternity with the composure that he has displayed with the willow in hand. In fact, Pope has played some classics in his short 17 match Test career. His 135* against South Africa at Port Elizabeth in January 2020 helped England thrash their opponents by an innings and 53 runs, and his 91 against the West Indies in July 2020 proved to the world that Pope is a talent to watch out for.

And, England’s current skipper Joe Root has already played over 100 Test matches and is over 30 years old. And, Pope is an ideal candidate who can replace Root as the leader of the England Test side when the current England Test skipper decides to step down.

2. Shimron Hetmyer

Hetmyer

Shimron Hetmyer has gained the reputation of being a destructive batsman who can annihilate any bowling attack when he is in the mood. And, the left-hander has featured in 16 Tests, 45 ODIs and 27 T20Is for West Indies. While he has scored 838 runs in Test cricket, Hetmyer has plundered 1430 runs and 379 runs in ODI and T20I cricket respectively.

Hetmyer is only 24 years old but is considered the future of West Indies cricket. And, he is a man who is a future leadership material for the West Indian outfit, especially in limited-overs cricket.

1. Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant has already got the entire cricketing world talking about him. The Indian wicket-keeper has dazzled with the willow in the recent past and is a man who has impressed the cricketing fraternity with his fearless approach to the game. In fact, in 2021 Pant averages 64.38 in Tests and 77.50 in ODI cricket.

And, Pant was even made the captain of the Delhi Capitals side in the 2021 edition of the IPL. The 23-year-old did a splendid job as the skipper, as the Delhi Capitals topped the points table winning 6 out of the 8 matches that they had played at the time of suspension of the IPL. Surely, Pant is the future of Indian cricket and is the right man to take over the captaincy of the Indian side from Virat Kohli.
