England skipper Eoin Morgan calls the IPL experience ‘priceless’
So, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has once again brought in the debate of club versus country. And in recent times, several England players have been lambasted for prioritizing their IPL stints over their national duties. And now, England skipper Eoin Morgan has let his thoughts known regarding the matter.
Morgan believed that the England players have massively benefited from playing in the lucrative IPL, and added that it had played a huge part in the England side winning the 2019 World Cup. He further reasoned that there are now two T20 World Cups that are coming up, and if England players can continue to participate in the IPL, they can gain massive experience and confidence.
“Yeah, we have benefitted from it (the IPL) massively and we are thankful for it and it has been a huge part in our development, particularly in the 50-over campaign towards the 2019 World Cup. So, with two T20 World Cups almost around the corner from each other, hopefully, we are going to continue to participate in the best and the biggest T20 tournament in the world. We gain huge experience and confidence from that,” said Morgan in a virtual press conference.
Eoin Morgan showers praise on the IPL
Morgan continued to shower praise on the IPL. The 34-year-old said that the IPL experience was huge, and opined that the development process that the players go through by sharing the dressing room with some of the very best in the business and the pressure of being an overseas player is a priceless experience.
“I think, it (the IPL experience) is huge. I think even regardless of the players involved in the World Cup, the development process that they go through just by being there, rubbing shoulders with the best in the world, being exposed to the pressures of being an overseas player in the biggest tournament in the world, priceless in many ways,” concluded the England batting legend.
He is one of the greatest batsmen to have ever worn the England jersey in limited-overs cricket. While he has scored 7598 runs in the ODI format and at an average of close to 40, he has also amassed 2278 runs in the T20I format at a strike rate of 138.99. Morgan has also featured in 66 matches in the IPL and scored 1272 runs.
