Sunil Gavaskar had scored his 10,000th run in Tests in Ahmedabad
Gavaskar made his debut during India’s tour of the West Indies in 1971 in the second Test at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain. Gavaskar’s twin fifties in that match, helped India to win. He went onto score 774 runs from four matches, a record for any batsman in his debut series that is till date intact.
India won that series, which was their first in the West Indies. The right-handed batsman went onto score 10122 runs in his Test career in 125 matches. He was also the first batsman to get to 10,000 runs in Test cricket. Interestingly, he achieved that feat at the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad (also known as Narendra Modi Stadium), where India and England are currently playing the fourth Test.
To celebrate the debut of Gavaskar, BCCI organized a ceremony in which the former cricketer was seen waving to his fans from the ground. His fellow commentators, Murli Kartik and Laxman Sivaramakrishnan were seen offering him a cake to cut after the lunch session when the trio was on air from the commentary box.
