BAN vs WI: Top five performers from the Test series
West Indies sealed a thrilling 17-run win over Bangladesh in the second Test on Sunday (February 14), winning the two-match series 2-0. Chasing 231 to level the series, Bangladesh fought hard on a square turner but Windies spinners Rahkeem Cornwall and Jomel Warrican were too good for them. Despite Mehidy Hasan’s impressive batting in the end, he couldn’t get the team over the line.
Over the course of the series, there were a lot of top performances from both teams. Here are the five top performers:
5. Liton Das (Bangladesh) – 200 runs
Liton Das batted at number seven in this series and proved his worth scoring 200 runs at an average of 50. It was due to his 71-run knock that Bangladesh were able to reduce the deficit in the first innings of the second Test. Even in the first Test, he had played a couple of cameos (38 and 69) and was crucial in putting Bangladesh ahead in the game.
4. Kyle Mayers (West Indies) – 261 runs
Kyle Mayers is one of the reasons the West Indies won this series. It was his dynamic, once-in-a-lifetime knock, in the second innings of the opening Test that the Caribbeans were able to chase down a mammoth total of 395. He scored an unbeaten 210 with 20 fours and 7 sixes. But he didn’t have much to show in the other innings. Overall he scored 261 runs at an impeccable average of 87.
3. Rahkeem Cornwall (West Indies) – 14 wickets
Rahkeem Cornwall ended the two-match Test series as the highest wicket-taker with 14 scalps to his name. He played a crucial role in helping West Indies seal the second Test picking a total of nine wickets and almost bowled unchanged from one end in the second innings taking up a lot of workload for his team.
2. Nkrumah Bonner (West Indies) – 231 runs
Though Mayers hogged the limelight for his double ton in the first Test, Bonner was the real find of the series for West Indies. He consistently scored runs in every innings and ended with 231 runs at an average of 57.75. His knocks of 86 and 90 helped the visitors come out of trouble and seal crunch situations. Deservedly, he won the Man of the Series award.
1. Mehidy Hasan (Bangladesh) – 198 runs and 10 wickets
Mehidy Hasan did whatever he could for Bangladesh throughout the series but didn’t get enough support from the other end. He slammed his maiden Test ton in the first Test and also picked up eight wickets but Mayers’ heroics got West Indies home. Even in the second Test, his all-round show came to the fore but he failed to get his team over the line in the end. Mehidy ended the series with 198 runs in four innings and also picked up 10 wickets.
