Going big: Most runs scored in a single over in List-A cricket
Records are created and broken every day in the world of cricket. While some get the limelight and get covered everywhere. But, some records are so unimaginable to get that when they are made or broken it becomes a sensational story for years to come in the cricketing community. One such record is that of the most number of runs in a single over of a List-A game. While many may think the total would be 36 runs, it is much more than that. So, to get you answers to that question, here is the list of the 5 instances when batsmen unleashed hell on the bowlers and scored a mountain of runs in a single over.
5. Kerala vs Hyderabad (35 runs)
Falling short of scoring the perfect 36, by just a margin of one run, yet making it into the record books was the captain of the Kerala cricket team, Raiphi Gomez. While batting in his team’s first inning in a Vijay Hazare match on February 11th 2010, Raiphi Gomez targeted the Hyderabad bowler Dwaraka Ravi Teja and smashed 35 runs off his bowling and got his name registered in the record books. That record-breaking over read, 6, 4, wd, 6, 6, 6, 6. Gomez himself scored 88 runs in that inning and his team got to a total of 358 runs, and this ended being too steep a total for the Hyderabad team to chase. They fell short of the total by 55 runs, before losing all of their wickets in 47.3 overs.
4. South Africa vs Netherlands (36 runs)
Hitting sixes in itself at the highest level is a tough task for any batsman. But the now-retired South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs became a member of the elite group of players to have hit six sixes in a row. By hitting those sixes, he became the first batsman in the world to hit six sixes in an over in a World Cup match. So, this inning was a record-breaking inning in every sense to say the least. At the receiving end of his brutal attack was the leggie from the Netherlands, Daan van Bunge. Gibbs’ innings ended with him scoring 72 runs off 40 deliveries. South Africa were propelled to 353 runs and in the response of which Netherlands managed to gather only 132 runs and the Proteas won by a huge 221- run margin.
3. Knights vs Cape Cobras (37 runs)
Jean Paul Duminy, the legendary all-rounder from South Africa, holder of many records in the world of cricket, came to get his name registered in the record books for one more time on the 17th of January in 2018. Leading the chase for his team, the Cape Cobras against the Knights in a Momentum One Day Cup match, Duminy took it to himself to help his team chase the total of 239 runs quickly. He smashed Eddie Lillie for 37 runs in an over, and this helped his team win the match by a margin of 8 wickets with as many as 78 balls remaining in the inning. The over read 6, 6, 6, 6, 2, 5, nb6. During his stay on the crease, Duminy scored 70 runs off 37 deliveries and walked back to the dressing room after ensuring that his team got to a comfortable win.
2. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmodi Club vs Abahani Lmited (39 runs)
In a match played way back in the year 2013 between the 30th of September and the 1st of October, an over bowled by the seamer playing for the Abahani Limited team, Alauddin Babu turned out to be a nightmare for him. He leaked as many as 39 runs and became the holder of an infamous record of bowling the most expensive over in List-A cricket. This fateful over was bowled in the first inning of the match, where Elton Chigumbura, in an attempt to boost his team’s score in the last few overs, ended up scoring this record score. That over read nb5, w1, 6, 4, 6, 4, 6, w1, 6. His team ended with a total of 282 runs and this helped them win the match by a 254-run margin.
1. Northern Districts vs Central Districts 2018/19 (43 runs)

It all happened on the 7th of November in 2018 when the batsmen of the Northern Districts players took the bowlers of the Central Districts to the task and smashed as many as 43 runs in a single over of their innings. In the first inning of the match, Joe Carter and Brett Hampton decided to hit their way through the bowling attack of their opponents and the bowler at the receiving end was the unfortunate Willem Ludick. He had been bowling well until the final over of his spell, where hell went loose on him. The over read 4, 6nb, 6nb, 6, 1, 6, 6, 6. This record-breaking over propelled the score of the Northern Districts to 313 runs. This ended up to be too big a target to chase for the Central Districts who ended on the losing side, with the scoreboard reading 288 runs.
