On this day: Mushfiqur Rahim registers the highest Test score for Bangladesh

Former skipper of Bangladesh national cricket team, Mushfiqur Rahim, is considered as the most successful player to lead the Test side. According to former coach Jammie Siddons, Rahim is equipped enough to bat at any order in the team. In the year 2020 only, when Bangladesh hosted Zimbabwe, he played an unbeaten knock of 203 runs.

He became the only Bangladeshi player and first wicketkeeper to have smashed three double tons in Test cricket. Talking of his another phenomenal performance, he stunned the Zimbabwe team yet again with his hero like performance in the second Test on this day in November 2018. He played an unbeaten knock of 219 runs, which stands to be the highest individual score by a Bangladeshi batsman. By achieving this feat, he became the first wicket-keeper to score two double tons in the Test format.

On the match day, batting first, Bangladesh declared on a huge 522/7. A huge score by Bangladesh came on the back of Mushfiqur Rahim’s splendid 219* and a century by Mominul Haque (161). Kyle Jarvis’ five-wicket haul was the bright thing from Zimbabwe’s bowling unit. Zimbabwe’s first innings got wrapped up on 304 runs thanks to a century from Brendan Taylor. Taijul Islam’s bowling stunned the opposition as he bagged a five-wicket haul to push his team ahead.

During the second innings, Bangladesh declared again on 224 runs this time to set a target of more than 400 runs, and won the Test by a massive margin of 218 runs. Mushfiqur was named as the man of the match without a doubt. His magnificent 219-run knock was one of the best of his career as he poured his blood and sweat to shine for the team. He faced 421 balls and stood in the middle for a period of 589 minutes, which is also a record for Bangladesh’s batsman in Test innings.

The series ended in a draw and Taijul Islam was named as the man of the series for his splendid bowling throughout. In the same month in 2018, Rahim played against West Indies and became the 2nd batter from Bangladesh national team to cross the 4000-run mark in the longest format of the game.
