Smashing hundreds: Top 5 franchises with most centuries in IPL

The much-awaited 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2020) commenced with a thrilling encounter between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Till now, we have witnessed a fearless brand of cricket with the audience being entertained with the nail-biting matches and super over finishes.

The 2020 edition of the T20 extravaganza has already produced some spectacular performances with the bat by the greats of the game and the debutants. Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) got off to a flying start into the league as their opening batsman and captain KL Rahul became the first player to smash a century this year. Showing his exceptional batting skills, Rahul scored 132* off 69 balls against RCB to register the highest individual score by an Indian cricketer in the IPL.

In the next match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Sharjah, Rahul’s opening partner Mayank Agarwal outscored his partner comfortably in run-scoring as he went on to smack a 45-ball ton to become the second-fastest Indian centurion ever in the cash-rich league. Mayank’s 106-run knock helped his team KXIP in overtaking the Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore and top the charts of the sides with most centuries in IPL history.

In it’s 13-year run in the Indian Premier League, Punjab have 13 centuries to their name in 182 matches. They are followed by Bangalore outfit that also have 13 tons but have featured in a total of 186 games so far in the T20 tournament. KXIP is placed ahead of RCB in the list as the former have significantly played a lesser number of matches than the latter. Interestingly, both the franchises are yet to claim their maiden victory in the T20 Championship.

The next team in the list is the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) who have witnessed their players scoring 8 centuries in 171 matches. In comparison to the other franchises, CSK has featured in less number of matches as it was banned from the tournament in 2016 and 2017 edition.

The fourth place in the list is acquired by Delhi Daredevils/Capitals who also have 8 centuries to their name. However, these centuries came in 183 fixtures due to which they are placed below the three-time champion Super Kings. Delhi is followed by Rajasthan Royals (RR) who found a place in this list as their batsmen crossed the 100-run mark as many as six times in these 13 years of the tournament. Notably, Rajasthan has featured in the least number of matches among all the sides in the list as, like CSK, they also suffered a 2-year ban from the league owing to the match-fixing charges on them.
