Plunging into depths: Lowest team totals of all IPL sides
Low totals have been part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) alongside the big totals that came through the brilliant batting performances. At times, due to the pitch conditions, the teams do fail to reach a respectable total. Seldom, we get to see top bowling attacks coming through such conditions only to end up with a dominating performance by restricting the opponent to a total under 100. Here are the lowest totals in the IPL of all the active eight teams:
Royal Challengers Bangalore – 49 in 2017:
On the 4th anniversary of smashing the highest IPL total of 263, the Royal Challengers Bangalore recorded the lowest total of the league. After restricting KKR to 131, the RCB team got rolled over for just 49 as no player reached double digits. Nathan Coulter-Nile initiated the collapse with a 3-wicket haul that included dismissing RCB skipper Virat Kohli to a golden duck.
Rajasthan Royals – 58/10 in 2009:
In their first match after becoming the first-ever champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Rajasthan Royals recorded the lowest total of the IPL which is till date bettered by only one team. Chasing a target of 134 against RCB on the first day of the 2009 edition, the Royals got collapsed to 58/10 with the leg-spinner Anil Kumble picking up 5/5 in his 3.1 overs.
Delhi Daredevils/Capitals – 66/10 in 2017:
Shortly after smashing down Gujarat Lions in a big chase, the Delhi Daredevils got crushed by the Mumbai Indians. Chasing MI’s total of 212/3, the Delhi team got bundled out for just 66 runs; the same number of runs scored by Lendl Simmons in the first innings. Mumbai Indians ended up winning the game by 146 runs which is the biggest win in terms of runs in IPL.
Kolkata Knight Riders – 67/10 in 2008:
The Kolkata Knight Riders began the IPL with a bang thanks to a sensational knock from Brendon McCullum. But in the same season, KKR bagged the lowest total of the league which still remains as their lowest in IPL. In the match against MI at the Wankhede Stadium, the Knight Riders collapsed to 67 having lost as many as nine wickets to the pacers.
Kings XI Punjab – 73/10 in 2017:
Kings XI Punjab faced the wrath of Rising Pune Supergiant on the final day of the league stage in the 2017. The Pune franchise, who needed a win to qualify for the playoffs, ran through the KXIP team by bundling them out to just 73. Jaydev Unadkat initiated the collapse with a dry opening spell which included the wicket of Martin Guptill on the very first ball of the match.
Chennai Super Kings – 79/10 in 2013:
Chennai Super Kings are not known for batting collapses but saw one in the 2013 season when they toured Mumbai. After restricting the hosts to 139/5 on a two-paced deck, they lost three wickets in the 3rd over of the innings bowled by Mitchell Johnson. The target became tricky for CSK who kept losing wickets and found themselves nine down for 54. Just when CSK looked like bowling out for the league’s lowest total, Jadeja made quick 20 runs before getting out at the score of 79.
Mumbai Indians – 87/10 in 2011 and 2018:
For the time being, Mumbai Indians did suffer big collapses and ended up with some low totals but not as low as other teams. Their lowest total in the IPL is 87/10 which was recorded on two different occasions. In the 2011 edition, the KXIP registered a 76-run win bowling MI out for 87 in only 12.5 overs after losing the last three wickets on the same score. In the 2018 edition, MI stumbled to 87 at home against Sunrisers while chasing 119 to win. MI was 73/4 after 13 overs but lost their last six wickets for 14 runs.
Sunrisers Hyderabad – 96/10 in 2019:
The Sunrisers Hyderabad often considered as a bowling dominant team has hardly been amongst the lowest totals. Their lowest total of 96 is the highest lowest total among the eight current teams in the IPL. During the home game in the 2019 season, SRH collapsed to 96/10 while chasing MI’s total of 136/7. Debutant Alzarri Joseph finished with figures of 6/12 which became the best in IPL history as SRH lost their last five wickets for eight runs.
