W, W, W: A list of all hat-tricks in the IPL
The Indian Premier League (IPL) has witnessed a total of 19 hat-tricks across the 12 seasons. The first of them was recorded by Lakshmipathy Balaji for the Chennai Super Kings in 2008 against Kings XI Punjab. The first two seasons witnessed three hat-tricks apiece, same as the 2017 edition. These are the most number of hat-tricks recorded in a single edition of IPL.
List of hat-tricks in the IPL
2015 and 2018 are the only IPL editions when even one hat-trick wasn’t recorded. India’s Amit Mishra is the only player in the league with as many as three hat-tricks, all of them coming for different franchises. He picked up his first IPL hat-trick for Delhi Daredevils in 2008, the second one in the 2011 edition for Deccan Chargers and the latest one in 2013 for the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
All-rounders Yuvraj Singh was the first player in the IPL with multiple hat-tricks. In the 2009 season, Yuvraj registered his first hat-trick in the match against RCB. A couple of matches later, he replicated the feat against Deccan Chargers. No player other than Yuvraj Singh has taken more than one hat-trick in the same season. Pravin Tambe’s hat-trick during the 2014 edition against Kolkata Knight Riders is the only hat-trick in the IPL which came off two legitimate balls.
Hat-trick on IPL debut
Australia pacer Andrew Tye remains the only player to take a hat-trick on IPL debut which he did so on his way to a 5-wicket haul during the 2017 season. On the same day, West Indies’ spinner Samuel Badree took a hat-trick for the RCB team in the second match. Among the current eight teams, Mumbai Indians is the only team to not have a hat-trick recorded for them in the IPL.
However, MI skipper Rohit Sharma, who led them to four titles, had taken one of the two hat-tricks in the IPL against the Mumbai Indians. Rohit achieved this feat in the 2009 edition while representing Deccan Chargers. Rohit, with that hat-trick, stood as the youngest player to achieve the feat until Sam Curran went past him in 2019.
