“Ready to explore a new aspect about my game” – Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane will be making a fresh start in this year’s IPL. The stylish batsman will be plying his trade for Delhi Capitals this season after serving Rajasthan Royals for nearly a decade. Coming into a young setup which is full of explosive batsmen, Rahane’s role in the DC team will be crucial. The batsman will be ready to bat in any given position and explore a new aspect of his game if needed.

“We are still in quarantine, so I don’t know what role I am going to play. Once training starts and the communication within the group happen, we will be aware. I have enjoyed opening the batting but it’s up to the team management. If there is a situation where I have to bat at No. 5 and 6, I will do it. That way I can explore a new aspect about my game,” Rahane said.

Delhi Capitals already have the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw and Jason Roy as the contenders for the opening slot. While Rahane has been opening the innings consistently for Rajasthan Royals, he is unlikely to open the innings for his new franchise. In 2019 IPL, the right-hand batsman scored 393 runs at an average of 32.8 and a strike rate of 137.9 with one century for the Royals.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting is DC’s head coach. Speaking about meeting the legend, Rahane added, “Playing under Ricky Ponting, I am excited. It is the best opportunity to take my game one step forward. We all know him as a player. Obviously, this time due to the COVID rules, the interactions may not happen that much but I can always call him. I have been following Delhi Capitals since the last two years. We have a fantastic bunch of players. Looking forward to play with them.”

Currently being treated as a Test specialist, Rahane is hoping to make a comeback in India’s white-ball teams. The batsman believes in himself and is will itching to prove his skills in the upcoming IPL season. He is currently serving quarantine period in the UAE.
