Afghanistan to host Australia and West Indies for T20I tri-series
The Afghanistan cricket team is planning to host a T20I tri-series, involving Australia and West Indies in India ahead of the T20 World Cup in 2021. All three boards have given a nod to this idea and the details of the tri-series will be chalked out later. India is still in the middle of the battle against coronavirus pandemic. As Afghanistan does not host any international cricket matches, the team will have to wait for the situation to be brighter in India.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup which was supposed to be hosted by Australia in 2020 has been postponed due to COVID-19. Australia will now be hosting it in 2022 while India will host the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 as scheduled.
Scheduling this tri-series will help all three teams in acclimatising with the Indian conditions prior to the World Cup.
ACB’s interim chief executive Nazim Zar Abdulrahimzai said, “This series will take place back in India prior to World Cup. It will be a triangular T20 series involving Afghanistan, West Indies and Australia.”
Earlier in August, Afghanistan’s five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe in Harare was cancelled due to COVID-19 situation.
Andy Moles, the Director of Cricket and chief selector of Afghanistan, said that they are trying their best to confirm the one-off Test against Australia, scheduled to start on 21st November in Perth.
”We are concentrating on getting a Test match confirmed against Australia in December,” said Moles.
