The Rise
Raina’s talent was there for all to see since his growing years. He led the state U-16 team and also found a place in India’s U-19 team at the age of 15. Playing in the U-19 World Cup of 2004, he dazzled with three fifties including a 90 off just 38 balls. He made his ODI debut in the following year and later played in India’s first-ever T20I match. Raina’s Test debut occurred in 2010 against Sri Lanka and he went on to celebrate it with a century.
The Comeback
Despite his obvious talent, Raina failed to solidify his spot in the Indian team. His consistent performances in the IPL for the Chennai Super Kings ensured his contention, however, he was sidelined from time to time. His domestic scores helped him make a comeback to the Indian team in 2018 but it remains his last active year in international cricket. The 33-year old can still harbour hopes of representing India again.
Off The Field
Raina is one of the most loved cricketers in India. The mountain of runs he has scored for Chennai Super Kings has earned him adulation from the Yellow Army but his charming personality has been a bigger attraction. A perfect sportsman, Raina has been the major reason for CSK winning multiple fair play awards. The love is reflected by his ever-growing numbers on social media. Despite not featuring in the Indian team off late, Raina remains one of the most influential cricketers in the virtual world.
