IND vs BAN: 2nd Test – Indian juggernaut sails through sea of records

India needed only 161.2 overs to wrap up the first-ever day-night Test played on the Indian soil. Playing with the pink ball, Indian pace bowlers routed through Bangladesh as the home side celebrated an emphatic victory by an innings and 46 runs. By winning this second Test, India also completed the 2-0 series win and reached 360 points in the World Test Championship points table. On their way to glory, India piled up a heap of records.

Home power!

Against India’s total of 347/9, Bangladesh managed only 106 and 195 runs in their two innings. The deficit of 46 runs saw Bangladesh lose by an innings. This was India’s fourth consecutive innings win in Test cricket and they are the first side in the history of Test cricket to do so. The Asian Giants won the last two Tests against South Africa by an innings, as well as both Tests in this series.

Seven on the trot

The triumph against Bangladesh was India’s seventh successive Test victory. This is a record for India. The previous streak of six Test victories on the trot had occurred in 2013 when India won 4-0 versus Australia and 2-0 versus West Indies at home. The current streak began in the Caribbean when India defeated West Indies 2-0. They followed it up with 3-0 result against South Africa and 2-0 against Bangladesh now.

Virat Kohli – the record machine!

There’s no stopping to Virat Kohli breaking records. With his phenomenal knock of 136, Virat completed 5,000 runs as an Indian Test captain. He also brought up his 70th international century which leaves him only one short of Ricky Ponting’s tally. Ponting occupies the second place after Sachin Tendulkar (100 centuries). The maverick batsman’s record of 20 centuries as a captain is also only second to South Africa’s Graeme Smith in Test cricket.

Fast and furious

Ishant Sharma – 9, Umesh Yadav – 8, Mohammed Shami – 2, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja – 0.

The troika of Indian fast bowlers picked all 19 wickets that fell in Bangladesh’s two innings (Mahmudullah retired hurt in the second innings). This was the first such instance in a home Test win, second overall, for India where spinners did not pick even a single wicket. There were only seven overs of spin from India.
