IPL 2020 Trade Window: Trent Boult traded to Mumbai Indians, Gowtham to KXIP

Boult

In an interesting trade-off ahead of the 2020 IPL, the Delhi Capitals have released New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult to defending champions Mumbai Indians. The trading window, which closes on Thursday (November 14), also saw Kings XI Punjab trade pacer Ankit Rajpoot for all-rounder K Gowtham to the Rajasthan Royals.

Although the details of the Boult deal remain unconfirmed, it is understood that Mumbai did not trade any of its players to Delhi in return. It is also unclear whether they paid any extra price over and above Boult’s auction price of INR 2.2 crore paid by the Capitals in 2018. They have also released Evin Lewis, their opening batsman from the previous season who only played three matches in 2018. Lewis picked up a hamstring injury that ruled him out for the remainder of the season. Mumbai have also brought Dhawal Kulkarni back to their squad from the Royals.

Welcome change for MI

Boult’s move is a welcome change for Mumbai since they were anyway looking to replace Australian left-arm pacer Jason Behrendorff, who is currently nursing a spinal surgery. With Lasith Malinga in and out of the playing XI, Boult’s addition will bolster Mumbai’s new and death ball pair alongside Jasprit Bumrah. Mumbai Indians had earlier roped in West Indies batsman Sherfane Rutherford from Delhi in exchange for leg-spinner Mayank Markande, who has now been traded off to the Royals.

“Mumbai Indians has always taken pride in having a good pace attack. Year-on-year our bowlers have won us many games, a classic example being last year’s final.

“We are delighted to have Trent Boult as part of the MI family and are looking forward to the upcoming season. I am sure his experience across formats, especially in the limited-overs, will add value to our campaign,” said Mumbai Indians’ owner Akash Ambani.

Gowtham, on the other hand, had a horrid outing with the Royals in 2018. After fetching a whopping price of INR 6.2 crore, the all-rounder finished the season with only 18 runs and one wicket in seven matches. The 31-year old player from Karnataka is a regular in the India A teams but is yet to display his potential in the IPL.
