CPL 2019: Carlos Brathwaite beats Trinbago Knight Riders with all-round performance

Carlos Brathwaite

Saint Kitts and Nevis Patriots captain Carlos Brathwaite’s magnificent all-round performance helped the side in stopping the four-match strong winning streak of Trinbago Knight Riders. Chasing 217, Brathwaite struck a whirlwind 64 from 30 balls. The match was tied and the all-rounder delivered a splendid performance in the Super Over to seal the victory. This was a group stage game played at Warner Park, St Kitts.

Simmons takes charge

Inserted to bat first, Knight Riders enjoyed a great start with Lendl Simmons firing shots everywhere. With him punishing bowlers for boundaries, TKR reached 76/1 in the powerplay overs. The opener did not slow down despite the relaxed fielding placements and kept going for maximums. When he fell for 90 from 45 balls (six sixes, nine fours), TKR were extremely well-placed at 139/2 in 11.4 overs.

Patriots fight back

The fast bowlers from home side pulled back things by maintaining discipline in the next few overs. TKR managed only 22 runs in the next four overs. The onus then fell upon the international hitters Kieron Pollard, Daren Bravo and Jimmy Neesham to take the score forward. The trio added 63 runs in the last 35 balls to finish the innings on 216/4.

Lewis goes after Neesham

After a steady start, Evin Lewis smashed the birthday boy Neesham to all parks. In the fourth over, Lewis blasted 6,4,4,6,6,4 which also included a wide from the New Zealander. The opener got out for 45 from 21 balls but provided the necessary momentum. His wicket did slow down the chase but then Brathwaite took over.

Brathwaite and tail secure tie

With Shamarh Brooks, Brathwaite cut loose and boundaries kept coming regularly. His brutal knock of 64 from 30 balls ended with Patriots still needing 44 runs from the last three overs. Fabian Allen and Rayad Emrit made most of their chances to narrow the target down to 19 from the last over. Neesham bowled a chaotic last over and conceded four on the last ball. He finished with the most expensive bowling figures in CPL history – 4 overs, 68 runs.

Brathwaite owns the Super Over

Lewis and Brathwaite came out to bat for Patriots in the Super Over. Brathwaite smashed sixes on the first and the fifth ball as the team managed 18 runs in their six balls. The batsman then stepped up to bowl the decisive over. He conceded only five runs in the over and won the game for his side.
