5 times when Australian cricketers received fitting replies to their sledges
Australia is known as one of the heavyweights of the cricketing world that can turn heads any day with their dominating performance with both bat and ball. They are known for their brilliant cricket around the world, but on the other hand, they are much known for their famous sledging incidents. They leave no stone unturned to instigate the players in front by muttering something or the other.
In the same line, there also have been incidents where Kangaroos have received fitting replies for the sledging. Let’s take a look.
5. Between Virat Kohli and James Faulkner
It happened during the India tour of Australia in 2016 in the limited-overs series. During the third ODI, Kohli was batting at 74 runs when James Faulkner muttered some words, which got recorded on stumps mic. However, the great batsman didn’t let this affect his game and went on to score a great 117 runs. He responded to Faulkner by- “You are wasting your energy, there’s no point. I have smashed you enough in my life. Just go and bowl.”
4. Between Ramnaresh Sarwan and Glenn McGrath
During Australia’s West Indies tour in 2003, Ramnaresh Sarwan got involved in a heated argument with McGrath. The West Indies were batting well at 237/4, and it came on the back of Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Sarwan’s great batting display. They had built on the partnership of 165 runs and were looking in brilliant form. In due course of time, Sarwan ran past McGrath, and that’s when the latter murmured- “What does Brian Lara’s c*ck taste like?” In response, Sarwan stated, “I don’t know, ask your wife.”
3. Between Robin Smith and Merv Hughes
The Ashes series without hardcore sledging is sort of alien, and the same happened between Robin Smith and Hughes during the second Test of Ashes in 1989. Merv Hughes ran into English batsman Robin Smith and stated- “You can’t f***** bat.” Smith came with a fitting reply during the incident and stated, “Hey Merv, we make a fine pair. I can’t f**** bat, and you can’t f**** bowl.
2. Between Virender Sehwag and Michael Clarke
The incident happened during the 2003-04 Test series in Australia when India was playing against the hosts’ A-side. Sachin Tendulkar walked up to bat after undergoing his back spasm treatment, and then, Michael Clarke told him to go back. Sachin remained quiet while maintaining his usual calm, but Sehwag got furious and asked young Clarke to remain silent. Sehwag asked him, which dog breed he belongs to as his teammates referred to him ‘Pup.’
1. Between Ravi Shastri and Mike Whitney
It happened during India’s tour of Australia in 1991-92, and Mike Whitney was brought in the field as 12th man. Shastri hit the ball in his direction, and in return, Whitney asked Shastri to stay in the crease or else he would break his head with his gestures. In return, Shastri gave a great reply and stated- “If you could bowl as well as you talk, you wouldn’t have been the 12th man.”
