5 Players who can cement their spots in the Australian team by BBL performances

The upcoming edition of Big Bash League (BBL) is going to be a crucial one for the Australian team and many exciting cricketers with dreams of representing the national team. With two editions of Men’s T20 World Cup in the next two calendar years, the performances in the upcoming BBL could hold a high significance. Hence, the tournament could witness the national team hopefuls put an extra mile in their performances.

Here we look at five players who could cement their place in the Australian team with their performances in the BBL 2020-21:

Joshua Phillipe:

Joshua Phillipe could well be an option Australia could look to rope in for the T20 CWC due to lack of a proper wicketkeeper in the T20 set-up. He came into the fray during last year’s Big Bash League where he created a record for most runs in a BBL edition for the Sydney Sixers with a total of 487 runs. The good 2020-21 BBL with the bat could well bring Phillipe into Australia’s scheme of things.

Riley Meredith:

Riley Meredith could well solve Australia’s struggles to find a pace-bowling option who could trouble the opposition irrespective of the phase. The trio of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood might not be an ideal one for the T20 format. Hence, Meredith’s pace and accuracy could hurry many top batsmen. His performances for the Hobart Hurricanes in BBL 2020-21 can well catch the eyes of the selectors.

Jhye Richardson:

Another pace bowling option which Australia might look at for roping into their T20I side is Jhye Richardson. The speedster made noise when he got the better of the No.1 ranked ODI batsman Virat Kohli three times in an ODI series last year. During the last BBL, Richardson conceded at only 7 runs per over and took 15 wickets across 14 games. Richardson could find himself in Australia’s T20I squad if he ends the BBL 2020-21 with anything close to 20 wickets.

Moises Henriques:

Moises Henriques returned to Australia’s limited-overs setup after three years and has provided decent contributions with both bat and ball. With the bat, he has got 20+ runs in each of the previous three games and looked confident in all those. But to seal a place in the Australia line-up for the T20 CWC, Moises will need a solid BBL 2020-21. The last season was a tough one for him as he scored runs at an average less than 25.

Mitchell Swepson:

Mitchell Swepson awaits a big 2020-21 BBL for sealing his position in Australia’s T20I side. Playing his 2nd T20I in two years during the last week, Swepson got the better of Virat Kohli, the Indian skipper. If he can prove his worth at wicket-taking skill in the coming edition of BBL, Swepson could well be considered as the 2nd spin-bowling option. The wrist spinners could be crucial during the next year’s T20 World Cup which is to be hosted by India.
