5 player trades that have turned out to be blunder for IPL teams
There is a lot to the Indian Premier League and it’s functioning than what meets the eye. And, one such thing is team management and player acquisition. Prior to every season of the Indian Premier League, the top minds of every franchise come together to make the squads for their teams, where they end up picking, releasing and trading some players. While many moves work out in their favour, some calls are such that the franchise ends up regretting to have taken. Here we will have a look at 5 such trades that ended up being blunders for the teams.
5. Ravichandran Ashwin (KXIP to DC)

One of the mainstays of the Indian Test team at the moment, Ravichandran Ashwin has proven his worth across formats over the years and has been consistently doing well in the Indian Premier League too. Having played for the Chennai Super Kings and then the Rising Pune Supergiant, Ashwin was bought by the Kings XI Punjab for the 2018 and 2019 season of the tournament. He was given the captaincy duties at the franchise but unfortunately, the team did not do well under his leadership. And his move to the Delhi team kind of proved to be good for the franchise as he has been one of the top-performing spinners of the team in the 2020 IPL. KXIP ideally should have retained him while relieving him of his captaincy duties but they went the other way and could be regretting now.
4. Quinton de Kock (RCB to MI)
The Royal Challengers Bangalore have had a history of releasing players who go on to do well with other teams. One such story is that of Quinton de Kock, who was released by the Royal Challengers Bangalore after which he joined the Mumbai Indians, and the rest is history. Before joining the Rohit Sharma led franchise, de Kock had to switch bases from one team to another. In the 2019 season, he joined his current franchise, with whom his form with the bat and gloves behind the wickets has been blooming. He has come to be a vital cog in the Mumbai line-up while his former teams look at him scoring runs against them and stumping their batsmen too.
3. Rahul Tewatia (DC to RR)

The biggest talking point of the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League, Rahul Tewatia would be a player whose acquisition by the Rajasthan Royals paid off much more than what anyone would have expected to. Tewatia along with Mayank Markande had come into RR in exchange of Ajinkya Rahane. Though the team has been knocked out of the tournament, placed at the bottom of the points table, Tewatia came up to be an asset that the Rajasthan team management would look to hold on to. In the 14 matches that he played in this season, he scored 253 runs and took 10 wickets too, contributing in every way possible.
2. Shikhar Dhawan (SRH to DC)
Ahead of the 2019 season of the Indian Premier League, the Sunrisers Hyderabad, the team that had enjoyed his services for multiple years let him go to the Delhi Capitals, in the form of a traded player. But, little did they know that this move of Dhawan would affect their team balance in a big way. During his time with the SRH, he used to open the batting with David Warner and the duo used to provide great starts to the team. His move from the team led them to utilise two foreigner spots for filling up the openers only. And this affected their balance overall. While Sunrisers bear the effect of the move and have settled with the David Warner- Jonny Bairstow and Wriddhiman Saha opening combos, Dhawan continues to do well with the bat for the Delhi Capitals, who are thoroughly enjoying his presence.
1. Trent Boult (DC to MI)
It is not a hidden fact that Trent Boult is a top-class batsman and when coupled with an equally capable bowler, he can be a huge threat for the batsmen. Over the years, he has established himself to be a bowling powerhouse in the Indian Premier League. This made the Delhi Capitals buy him for a sum of Rs. 2.2 crores for the 2019 season of the tournament. There he met Kagiso Rabada and the two came to torment the batsmen of every team that they played against. But, ahead of the 2020 edition of the IPL, Delhi released him and Mumbai Indians roped him in for an even bigger amount. And in that team along with Jasprit Bumrah, he has dominated the tournament while his former team has been regretting the decision of letting such a quality bowler go.
