5 most embarrassing IPL records teams and players would like to forget
The Indian Premier League has entertained cricket fans for over a decade now. It has given young talents the opportunity to play alongside some of the best cricketers in the world. While we have seen some impeccable records over the course of history, there have been some rather dubious ones as well. In this article, we talk about 5 dubious records teams and players have to their name in his star-studded league.
5. Royal Challengers Bangalore- All-out for 49
RCB has been one of the most entertaining teams in the Indian Premier League. They hold the record for the highest (263/5) and unfortunately the lowest total in the history of the league- 49/10. This game was a part of IPL 2017, where KKR mustered up a total of 131 after being 61/1 in the Powerplay. RCB then put up an extremely dismal show with the bat, with all batsmen throwing away their wickets with poor shots. The highest score of 9 from Kedar Jadhav ensured that RCB broke all records.
4. Rajasthan Royals- 14/2 in the Power Play
Rajasthan Royals won the Indian Premier League in 2008, but they haven’t replicated that feat ever since. The following year, in their match against Royal Challengers Bangalore they restricted them to a below-par total of 133/8. Rajasthan struggled to put bat to ball in the Powerplay, scoring a measly 14 at the expense of 2 wickets. The top 3 of Graeme Smith, Swapnil Asnodkar and Niraj Patel flopped miserably in this match. They would have fancied chasing down the target after the poor show in the Powerplay, but Kumble’s brilliance (5/5) bundled them out for the then lowest total in the league- 58.
3. Delhi Capitals- Most consecutive losses (11)
Delhi Capitals are on top of the table this IPL season at the end of the first week. They also reached the playoffs last year. However, there was once a time when Delhi was among the worst performers in the league. They lost 9 consecutive games in 2013 under the leadership of Virender Sehwag, and then lost another 2 of their initial games in 2014.
2. Gautam Gambhir- 3 consecutive ducks
Gautam Gambhir has been one of the shrewdest captains in the history of the league. He led Kolkata Knight Riders to 2 IPL titles in 2012 and 2014. Although he is one of the top run-scorers in IPL, he had a poor start to the 2014 season. He scored three consecutive ducks against Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. However, he did end up recovering from the poor start to some extent, scoring 335 runs in the next 13 innings at a strike rate of more than 115.
1. Basil Thampi- 0/70 vs Royal Challengers Bangalore
The Kerala born speedster was playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League. He conceded a record 70 runs against the star-studded Royal Challengers Bangalore. He was brought in to bowl in the 9th over by captain Kane Williamson after which Moeen Ali and AB de Villiers launched an assault on him. He conceded 19,18, 14, and 19 runs respectively in his four overs, taking Bangalore to a mammoth 218/6.
